It's widely acknowledged that with great skin care comes great skin.

But with the basics often overlooked, Infinite Beauty have revealed their top 5 tips for maintaining a beautiful complexion.

"Let's embark on a journey to look after ourselves and treat our skin right by partaking in good skin care," says the upscale beauty boutique, "and here's how."

5. Keep your brushes clean

"Beauty blenders too," says Infinite Beauty.

According to a study commissioned by Anisa International, over 60% of those surveyed cleaned their makeup brushes less than once per month.

"Today's consumers are spending a significant amount on cosmetic brushes in order to achieve desired makeup looks, but they're not protecting their investment or their skin by properly caring for these tools," says Anisa Telwar-Kaicker, founder of Anisa International.

"Anything which encounters your skin, including makeup brushes and sponges, should be washed at least weekly," Infinite Beauty advises. "Try using a gentle cleanser like baby shampoo."

Indeed, dirty brushes are prone to bacteria buildup, leading to skin irritation, breakouts, clogged pores, and even viral infections.

4. Avoid using face wipes

"Most face wipes don't offer many benefits besides moving oil and bacteria from one part of your face to another," says Infinite Beauty. "They're also awful for the environment!"

With this in mind, Infinite Beauty recommends simply using micellar water to gently remove makeup.

"The idea is that micelles are attracted to dirt and oil, so they're able to draw out impurities without drying out the skin," says board-certified dermatologist Hadley King in an interview with HuffPost. "Therefore, micellar water can be used as a facial wash, makeup remover and moisturizer all in one," she adds.

"A double cleanse would be ideal, but when you just want to fall asleep in bed, swap out wipes for micellar water," advises Infinite Beauty.

3. Regularly clean your pillowcases

Less of a beauty tip and more general housekeeping, but something which many people are often inclined to overlook, according to Infinite Beauty.

"This is one of the many tasks which gets overlooked or forgotten," says the company, "but let's make it a habit to wash them on the regular." They go on to explain, "Pillowcases are covered in bacteria from sebum on your scalp, and residue from any oily or creamy hair products you use."

Infinite Beauty points out that sleeping with clean pillowcases can reduce mild breakouts, while also reminding us of another benefit. "You get to snuggle in a clean bed!" says the company, cheerily.

2. Throw out old makeup

It's easy to forget that most makeup has an expiration date once opened.

"We've all been guilty of hoarding old mascara, lipstick, and eyeshadow palettes in our makeup drawer," says Infinite Beauty.

"Get rid of that old moisturizer and makeup which has just been sitting around. The majority of makeup and skincare products have a shelf life once opened," the company points out.

Infinite Beauty advises that gel and liquid eyeliners have a shelf life of around six months. Pencil liners can be kept for around a year.

Mascara is good for three to six months, while powders should last one year, as long as they remain looking and smelling good.

Of liquid foundation, the company says, "If it's in a pot, it's good for no longer than six months. If it's in a pump bottle, you can use it for up to two years."

Finally, lipstick should also last up to two years. "However, do remember to toss it if you notice changes in color, texture, or smell," adds Infinite Beauty.

1. Use sunscreen

"We all know we should be wearing a layer beneath our makeup before we walk out of the door," says Infinite Beauty, "but we often don't."

The company laments, "It feels like an extra step in getting ready, and many of us despise the unwanted greasy feeling of sunblock on our skin."

Skin protection, however, should be an essential step in your routine.

"Protection from sunburn is not the most important reason for wearing sunscreen. You want to reduce damage from the sun. Remember, sunburn is an immediate reaction, but damage from the sun occurs over a lifetime," Ohio's Cleveland Clinic, a non-profit academic medical center, advises.

"Consider trying a moisturizing facial sunscreen," says Infinite Beauty. "A facial sunscreen is unlike the usual sunblock lotion. It's designed for just your face and won't clog pores or make makeup impossible to apply."

Of their 5 top tips, Infinite Beauty concludes, "Small changes are just as important as bigger ones, even if they sound superficial. Let's all aim for better skin!"
